mDSS Tool

mDSS is a Decision Support System tool to facilitate participatory processes for the sustainable and integrated – economic, social and environmental – management of natural resources.

Originally developed within the MULINO Project (MULti-sectoral, INtegrated and Operational decision support system for the sustainable use of water resources at the catchment scale), financed by the European Commission within the 5th Framework Programme (FP5), mDSS (MULINO-DSS in short) is the result of further development carried out within the NetSyMod Programme (Network Analysis-Creative System Modelling-Decision Support), with the scientific direction of Prof. Carlo Giupponi at Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM, Italy), in collaboration with George Cojocaru at the Foundation for Applied Information Technology in the Environment, Agriculture and Global Changes (TIAMASG, Romania). Development and maintenance were possible thanks to a series of grants provided by the European projects TRANSCAT and SMART (FP5), ITAES, Brahmatwinn and Nostrum-DSS (FP6), OPERAs (FP7), ISIIMM (MEDA), Climalptour and C3-Alps (Alpine Space), ICARUS (Era-Net), at FEEM, the Universities of Milan (Statale) and Venice (Ca’ Foscari), and the CMCC Foundation (Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change).

It can help users to:

  • better understand or explain to the involved actors (disciplinary experts, policy/decision makers, other stakeholders) the problem at hand,
  • explore possible decision options, also within the contexts of alternative scenarios,
  • facilitate public participation,
  • smoothen the conflicts related to alternative courses of action,
  • extend collaboration with and within different stakeholder groups.
